Introduction

There is now a full array of practical applications available for enabling communication and collaboration of groups across geographic boundaries. These high tech collaboration solutions, such as groupware and many other collaborative applications eliminate some serious borders but introduce some new challenges as well. This workshop will explore the challenges of knowledge sharing within this changing context of virtual work.


The workshop is sponsored by the Priority Research Program 'Society and the Electronic Highway' of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).
It is the aim of the workshop to bring together people engaged in the study of virtual collaboration and knowledge sharing. Topics include the following:

Procedures

This full day workshop can have a maximum of 15 participants. The participants will be selected on the basis of a submitted position paper of maximum 2-3 pages. Position papers should be sent to r.verburg@tbm.tudelft.nl.

Notification of acceptance: 15 July

Robert M. Verburg (1967) joined the faculty of Technology Policy and Management at Delft University of Technology in 2002 and is currently an Assistant Professor of Organizational Psychology. He has a Ph.D. in organizational psychology and teaches in the areas of human resource management, organizational psychology and knowledge management. His current research interests include, knowledge sharing, coordination mechanisms for virtual workgroups, and mobile work. Specifically, he is interested in the impact of human resource management on knowledge sharing in organizations. He is currently involved in projects on knowledge sharing in communities of practice and project memory.

Prof. dr. Paul A. Kirschner (1951) is professor of Educational Technology at the Educational Technology Expertise Center (OTEC) at the Open University of the Netherlands with a chair in CSCL and professor of Contact and Distance Education at the Faculty of General Sciences/Knowledge Engineering at Maastricht University. He is former Dean of the School of Education, Open University of the Netherlands and is currently a member of the Educational Council of the Netherlands (Onderwijsraad), chief advisory council to the Minister of Education with a portfolio in ICT. His areas of expertise include Computer supported collaborative learning, Media-use in education, Development of teacher extensive (distance) learning materials, Use of practicals for the acquisition of cognitive skills and competencies, Design and development of electronic learning and working environments, and Innovation and the use of information technology educational systems.
